Clive Cox Awarded The Willie Stephenson Memorial Trophy

The Willie Stephenson Memorial Trophy commemorates the co-founder of DBS, now Goffs UK, and is awarded annually to the person or persons whom the Goffs UK Board feel have made the biggest contribution to the success of the company during that year.

The unanimous choice for 2017 is Clive Cox.

A leading UK trainer, Clive has been a long-time supporter of DBS and now Goffs UK Sales, and has enjoyed numerous successes with Doncaster graduates, in particular from the Premier Yearling Sale. Clive’s first Group 1 winner as a trainer was a horse he purchased from the Premier Sale, Gilt Edge Girl, who won the Group 1 Prix de l'Abbaye in 2010. Since then he has sourced a further two stable stars from the sale, Reckless Abandon and now Harry Angel who was crowned last season’s Cartier Champion Sprinter following his wins in the Group 1 Darley July Cup and Sprint Stakes.

Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby presented the award to Clive and commented:

“Clive is a popular figure across the industry and has been a loyal supporter of our sales for many years, so we are delighted to present him with the Willie Stephenson Memorial Trophy.

“Clive has always had an amazing eye for quality and value as his record over the years clearly demonstrates. His first Group 1 winners, Gilt Edge Girl and the dual Group 1 winning 2YO Reckless Abandon, are a testament to that ability and his newest stable star, Harry Angel, is another shining example.

“Our Premier Yearling Sale is our flagship flat sale and Clive’s continued support, and success from it, has been key to its development. 2017 was a superb season for the sale and a big part of that success was due to Harry Angel, a horse that Clive has nurtured into one of the world’s best sprinters.

“2018 shapes as another big season for the yard with Harry Angel Royal Ascot bound and we look forward to plenty more success to come.”
