Richard Brown the 2021 Willie Stephenson Memorial Trophy Winner

The Willie Stephenson Memorial Trophy commemorates the co-founder and first chairman of DBS (now Goffs UK) and is awarded annually to the person or persons whom the Goffs UK Board feel have made the biggest contribution to the success of the company during that year. The unanimous choice for 2021 is Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock.

A long-time supporter of DBS and now Goffs UK, Richard has been one of the leading buyers at the Breeze Up and Premier Yearling Sales through Blandford Bloodstock and has purchased some outstanding horses from the Doncaster Ring. His record at the Breeze-Up Sale is one of note, having purchased the multiple Group 1 winning sprinter Dream Ahead, Royal Ascot Listed Windsor Castle Stakes winner and now Group 1 sire Ardad, Group 3 Horris Hill Stakes winner and live Classic contender Light Infantry and last season’s dual Group 1 winner and live Classic contender Perfect Power.

The annual trophy commemorates DBS’ founder and first Chairman, Willie Stephenson, and was instigated by his successor, Harry Beeby, who in turn was succeeded by Goffs UK’s current Chairman, Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby who made the presentation to Richard on the eve of the 2022 Breeze-Up Sale.

Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent commented on the award:

“Richard has been a great friend to DBS/Goffs UK over the years and it’s entirely appropriate that we present him the Willie Stephenson Memorial Trophy at the very sale from which he has bought so many wonderful horses. Perfect Power is one of several headline horses to have come from the sale that Richard has purchased and it’s indeed fitting that it was Richard who bought Ardad’s first Group 1 winner, having bought Ardad in 2016.

“Perfect Power continues to do wonders for the Doncaster Breeze-Up Sale following his brilliant Greenham Stakes win on Saturday and there is plenty to look forward to with his Classic 2000 Guineas clash next month and we wish Richard and connections the very best of luck. We thank Richard for all his support over the years and we are sure he will be unearth many more Group 1 talents in the years to come.”
